Surfaces, thin films & lithium-ion batteries

Dr. Marcos Flores Carrasco is an academic at the Physics Department of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chile, where he is the academic in charge of the Surfaces and Nanomaterials Laboratory (LSN). His main fields of interest are fundamental problems on the growth mode at the early stage of metallic material on insulator surfaces, and the study of deposition parameters to obtain nanostructured metallic and transition metal oxide (TMO) thin films onto different substrates, with application of TMOs as cathodic material in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and for resistive switching devices. His second line is the fundamental study of molecule adsorption on metallic surfaces and the formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs), applied to thin films for protection against oxidation or biocorrosion and to surface functionalization as a metal-polymer linker. He currently works on applying SAMs onto metallic oxides to understand the formation of the cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) on cathodic materials of LIBs, aiming to tune the properties of the CEI to counter the damage caused to the anode by the electrolyte.
