Abstract
Abstract: Rare-Earth doped Sodium Borate glasses were prepared with varying concentration of Neodymium (III) oxide in the following composition (70-x) B2O3-30Na2O3-xNd2O3 (x= 0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 1 mol %). Samples were synthesized using melt quench technique with air as the quenching medium. Radiation Shielding assessment was conducted using both experimental and computational techniques. Phy -X PSD and XCOM softwares were used to produce theoretical radiation shielding parameters including Mass Attenuation Coefficient (MAC), Linear Attenuation Coefficient (LAC), Half Value Layer (HVL), Tenth Value Layer (TVL), Mean Free Path (MFP) and Effective Atomic Number (Zeff), while the Experimental measurements were performed using a gamma-ray spectrometer. Increase in rare earth doping corresponded to direct increase in radiation shielding ability of the borate glass with 1 mol% dopant concentration resulting in the best radiation shielding ability among the prepared samples.
